Nita Jean Dennison

Nita Jean Dennison, 95, of Welch WV, died January 13, 2026 at McDowell Healthcare Center in Gary WV. She was born December 28,1930 in Gary WV, a daughter of the late Gertrude W. And C. Roland Dennison. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Jones. She was a graduate of Welch High School Class of 1948 and also from the Jefferson School of Commerce. At Welch High School she was a member of the choir, the girls basketball team, the journalism staff, May Court, the marching band, and was head majorette. She received the Welch Junior Women’s Club award in 1962. Throughout her life, Nita dedicated herself to serving others. One of her defining traits was her strong work ethic, having worked 75 years, and just retiring 3 years ago, at age 92. Much of her professional life involved the health care industry, having worked at local hospitals and the county health department. She retired from Welch Community Hospital after 41 years of service, and received a certificate of appreciation for loyal and dedicated service from former WV Governor Jim Justice. Nita was an accomplished pianist and singer and was always willing to share her musical talent with others. She provided music to various clubs, as well as a soloist and musical accompaniment for services at local funeral homes. Her faith and church were always a guiding force in her life. After being a member of Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years, she faithfully attended the First United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and being the assistant pianist. Nita enjoyed traveling with family and friends and had many fun times at various beaches, trips to California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and New York City. Nita leaves behind a family she loved and cherished including a nephew, Robert Jones of Richmond CA; a niece, Nancy Phillips of Coalwood WV; three great-nephews and their spouses: Kevin and Kathleen Phillips of Westampton NJ; Arnie Phillips and Megan Patterson and sons Leiland and Brody of Bluefield WV; and Chuck and Jessica Phillips of Christiansburg VA; a great-great nephew Chase Phillips, and a great-great niece Cayleigh Phillips. She also adored the family dogs Sophie and Jordan. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses, CNAs and staff of McDowell Healthcare Center and Amedisys Hospice, whose care and devotion made her final days more comfortable. They also thank Reverend Brad Davis and her friends and loved ones for their kindness and spiritual support during her illness. Following Nita’s wishes, her body has been cremated. A private remembrance will be held by the family.
